Democracy is encouraged by prosperity, income equality, ethnic homogeneity, global media, a Protestant background and closeness to democratic countries. Economically advanced economies demonstrate rapid value change unlike stagnant low-income countries. However, young people in low-income countries are more likely than their elders to believe in gender equality. When people believe they have free choice, they are happier. Islamic societies of the Middle East have the strongest emphasis on traditional and survival values, although young Muslims with higher education—especially women, are more likely to have emancipative values.
