Neoliberal capitalism creates terrible inequalities that plague young people and their futures. Writer Graham Peebles lists evidence of suffering caused by about 13 wars, half the world lives on less than $2 a day, 22,000 children die each day from poverty-related illnesses, 900,000 people commit suicide each year, millions suffer from depression, and politics, education, and media are manipulated to enforce conformity and lack of independent thinking.[i] He quotes Noam Chomsky, that the way to keep people passive is to allow free speech but only within a limited spectrum of accepted thought. The focus on survival robs energy from creative and exploration. Youth uprisings name neoliberalism as the problem.Graham Peebles, “A Revolution of Ideas is Needed,” Counter Punch, June 27, 2014.
