Small Group Changemaking Tactics

The small group Earth Quaker Action Team (EQAT) identified the tactics that enabled them to slow down coal company removal of mountain tops in Appalachia.[i] They decided on one clear goal, to convince PNC Bank that claimed to be a “green bank” not to finance the coal companies. They found mentors and allies in the Rainforest Action Network and created media attention by confronting bank board members at public events, bringing busloads of demonstrators to the bank’s headquarters in Pittsburgh, and joining in “I Love Mountains Day” during Valentine’s Day. The next month PNC agreed to give up financing the two largest coal companies and celebrating with “much partying.”
